On a couple of occasions we’ve had a computer without virus protection software running. Usually it’s been because the subscription expired and we forgot to renew or switch to a new product. Fortunately we did not get invaded during the short interim, but it does make me nervous thinking about being unprotected.

There are a lot of choices in antivirus software, some of it being free and some not. The free software is really intended for use in private, home computers. Companies like Avast! and AVG actually intend for you to purchase their commercial product. They figure that they’ll make you a loyal fan with the free product, and then hope your honesty will compel you to buy the other software for the work computers. The free software category is one of the heaviest in terms of download activity on the internet.

There are some differences between the different antivirus software choices. You want to make sure the software does not take up too much space in the memory of your computer and slow it down. You want it to provide regular updates relating to the latest internet threats.

The antivirus program must check all incoming files and downloads. There is a huge diversity in file types that must be checked. If everybody converted their word processing, spreadsheet, database and other computer files to pdf format it would simplify things, but as it is the virus protection must analyze many types of files very quickly as they are downloaded into your system.

If the software is not designed to handle this ongoing function efficiently, you will notice that downloads take an awful long time to complete. If that is the case with you, consider if you should check out one a different virus protection product.
