Avoiding stereotypes with Spectrasonics Omnisphere power synth

It’s just come out! The new $499/Eu379 virtual soft synth from Spectrasonics called “Omnisphere”. They describe it as a “Power Synth” and it certainly has a great combination of innovative features to make sure it can deliver.

But, like its’ older brother, Atmosphere, there’s a massive danger that Omnisphere will be regarded and used as a ROMpler. A ROMpler being a synth based on a fixed sample library which is usually just disguised with standard subtractive synthesis like filtering and envelopes. The most creative most ROMplers get is to provide layering (stacking of sounds in to a combination) and naturally polyphony suffers when you do that.

But layering sounds basically creates “thick” rich sounds, which while they sound impressive with one finger in the shop demo, do not often mix together very well in a production. Everything can’t compete for attention, or it just becomes noise.

With ten times the sample library size of Atmosphere, the 40GB library certainly lends itself to this way of layered ROMpler thinking. And maybe that is what most people expect from a synth that either emulates real acoustic instruments, or re-creates vintage analogue oscillators. After all a sawtooth wave from a Moog, is a sawtooth wave from a Moog, right? How much sample space do you need to sample a few cycle?

But there are several issues here;

Firstly with that many preset sample sounds, how can you ever hope to get to know your new tool?

Secondly it’s a total waste of the power inside of Omnisphere.

Thirdly, the factory presets will fast become clone monkey stereotypes once the first celebrity has used the classic patch from each style family.

Fourthly as great as the team of Spectrasonic programmers are, they ultimately each have their own songs in their head. Couple that with the resident preset management team and you have a house sheen that will date this synth before a month has passed.

All of that would be a great shame and totally avoidable. There is enough power in this synth to make a main stay and long term synth with great variety and enormous inspiration. But the solution doesn’t lie in buying even more presets. It comes from knowing and understanding how to tame the new presets you are going to buy.

Buying even more presets for a synth that comes with thousands already, may seem like lunacy. But members of OmniSsphere Elite ( http://www.OmniSphereElite.com ) think it’s the most sane thing in the world to do. A way of getting more out of their Spectrasonics Omnisphere. Also you don’t even have to buy them, once you are an Elite member. They are included.

The Elite methodology means you won’t ditch OmniSphere as soon as the next preset synth comes out, or your fingers tire from dialling endless presets to find the one you need. Even with the built-in categorised browser, your productions will not be free. Now you no longer need to feel dictated to make your song productions follow your random preset choices. Oh No!

You can find out more about the OmniSphere Elite methodology from the website, located at http://www.OmniSphere.US

Your Omnisphere should thank you for it…
